More details are slowly emerging about OpenAI’s mysterious new hardware venture—earlier described as an AI-powered smart speaker that would serve as the “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg, the device will have a “donut-shaped” design, intended to let users carry it around their home and set it in various spots, such as a nightstand or kitchen counter. It will be crafted from “high-quality metal,” feature a “premium aesthetic,” and—in a puzzling twist—include distinct “moving parts,” sources told Bloomberg. The price tag could also exceed that of your typical smart speaker, potentially landing between $300 and $400 per unit, the report suggests. For context, most of Amazon’s smart home speakers range from around $40 on the low end to $240 on the high end. So, in short: an expensive, talking AI donut with… moving parts.

There’s a certain logic to OpenAI releasing a smart home device—it would deepen ChatGPT’s integration into everyday life. Yet, historically, smart speakers haven’t always been lucrative, and breaking into that market could prove challenging. A steep price point might not help matters either. The device, developed in collaboration with LoveFrom—the design studio founded by renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive—is expected to launch sometime in 2027, per Bloomberg.
