OpenAI Reveals Donut-Shaped ChatGPT Smart Speaker for the Home

More details are steadily emerging about OpenAI’s enigmatic new hardware venture—previously described as an AI-powered smart speaker meant to serve as the “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg, the device will be “donut-shaped,” a design choice intended to let users carry it around the house and set it down in various spots, such as a bedside table or kitchen counter. It will reportedly be crafted from “high-quality metal,” feature a “premium look,” and—in a detail that raises eyebrows—include distinct “moving parts,” as sources told Bloomberg.

The price tag could also set it apart from typical smart speakers, with estimates ranging from $300 to $400 per unit. For context, most of Amazon’s smart home speakers fall between $40 on the low end and $240 on the high end. So, in short: an expensive, talking AI donut with moving parts.

There’s a certain logic to OpenAI entering the smart home space, as it would weave ChatGPT more deeply into everyday life. That said, smart speakers haven’t historically been a goldmine, and breaking into that market could prove challenging. The potentially steep price point might not help matters either.

The device is being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive, and is expected to launch sometime in 2027, per Bloomberg. OpenAI’s foray into hardware hasn’t been entirely smooth, though. The company is currently facing a lawsuit from Apple, the reigning hardware giant, which accuses the AI lab of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing.
