OpenAI Files Confidentially for IPO, But CEO Sam Altman Says Company Won't Go Public This Year

OpenAI has confidentially filed for an IPO, but CEO Sam Altman has confirmed the company won't be going public this year. During a recent interview with Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell, the conversation touched on the aftermath of the OpenAI-HuggingFace hack and broader AI safety concerns. Shontell asked whether OpenAI still feels pressure to "move really fast" because of its IPO plans.
"We're not rushing into an IPO," Altman stated. He went on to explain that with everything currently happening around safety, going public right now would be an ill-advised move.
Instead, Altman emphasized that OpenAI will go public "when we're ready, which is when the business is ready, when we feel ready from what the moment is like in society with this technology." When asked directly whether that meant the IPO wouldn't happen in 2026, Altman responded, "I would say not 2026, yeah. We've got a lot of stuff to do."
Back in June, The New York Times reported that OpenAI had brought on bankers and lawyers with the aim of going public in the third or fourth quarter of 2026. However, the company was reportedly leaning toward 2027 instead, citing volatility in tech stocks and its own financial challenges.
