A small AI research group called PrismML, started by researchers from Caltech and guided by UC Berkeley's Ion Stoica, has developed a compact language model designed to run on smart glasses powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors.

During Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit on Wednesday, the chip company put a spotlight on PrismML's 1-bit Bonsai LLM, a model capable of operating directly on AI smart glasses built with the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 Platform.

This version for smart glasses is a 2-billion-parameter model specifically optimized for both vision and language tasks, allowing users to ask about objects they're viewing in real time.

PrismML's broader mission centers on open-weight AI that operates on devices themselves, making smarter use of the hardware people already own. The startup positions this approach as an alternative to relying on privacy assurances from proprietary AI companies and their endless appetite for additional computing resources. Launching a model tailored for Qualcomm's chip represents progress toward that goal.

However, no smart glasses featuring PrismML have been officially announced as of yet.
