SpaceXAI Launches Grok 4.5: New Model Doubles Performance for Coding, Research, and Office Tasks

SpaceXAI has unveiled its newest model, Grok 4.5, marking the company's first major release since its public debut a few weeks ago. In a blog post on Wednesday, SpaceXAI described the model as a versatile workhorse capable of handling the full range of tasks the AI industry aims to automate—from coding and app development to office work, research, writing, and other routine knowledge jobs. The company also claims Grok delivers these capabilities at a lower cost, boasting "twice greater token efficiency" compared to leading competitors. If this efficiency holds up in practical applications, it could be a significant advantage for SpaceXAI, as token costs have become a growing concern for AI users. Benchmark metrics released on Wednesday showed Grok performing competitively against other top models from rivals, though it fell just short of best-in-class status.

On his social media platform X, which is a subsidiary of SpaceXAI, founder Elon Musk compared the new model to Anthropic's Opus, a large language model designed for demanding, complex tasks. "Based on strong positive feedback from customers in our beta test program, @SpaceXAI will make Grok 4.5 available to the public tomorrow. It is an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost," Musk wrote on X. He added, "Our internal assessment is that Grok 4.5 is roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster. The combination of capability, faster speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive."
SpaceXAI has priced Grok 4.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. This is highly competitive, provided the model's real-world performance matches the company's claims. For comparison, Anthropic's Opus 4.7 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. OpenAI offers tiered pricing for its models: its most expensive version, Sol, costs $5 for input tokens and $30 for output, while its cheapest, Luna, is priced at $1 for input and $6 for output. This week is a busy one for AI model launches. OpenAI is set to release GPT 5.6, its latest and most powerful model, on Thursday. The release had previously been delayed by the Trump administration due to security concerns. OpenAI has described it as its "strongest model yet."
