Relay AI Workflow Automation Tool Shuts Down, Founder and Team Join Google Chrome

Relay, an AI-powered workflow automation platform launched in 2021 with ambitions to succeed Zapier, is ceasing operations, and several team members—including its chief executive—are moving to Google’s Chrome division. Founder and CEO Jacob Bank communicated the company’s announcement on Monday, revealing that paying customers will lose access to the app on September 14, while free users already had their access cut off as of August 15. The shutdown was initially publicized back in July. Bank, who previously spent over six years at Google, announced he is rejoining the tech giant as VP of Product for Google Chrome, where he will oversee the product and developer relations teams, per his LinkedIn profile.
“I’ve spent my whole career doing one thing: building tools that help people get more done with AI, without sacrificing their personal creativity or insights,” Bank wrote in a post on X. “And joining the Chrome team is an ideal opportunity to bring those experiences to many, many more people.” He added, “We have some really ambitious plans to help you work with AI in Chrome to get things done, and I’ll have more to share soon.”
Bank originally joined Google in 2015, following the acquisition of his earlier startup, Timeful, a scheduling app. During his tenure there, he took on various roles, including product lead for Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Chat, before departing to launch Relay. Much like Timeful, Relay focused on boosting productivity through workflow automation, enabling businesses to streamline repetitive tasks such as document drafting, copyediting, and project management. How Bank and his colleagues intend to deepen AI integration into Chrome remains an open question, though Bank describes Chrome as “a perfect place to collaborate with agents.”
This development follows a consistent trajectory of AI being woven into Google’s user experience. The integration of Gemini into search has dramatically reshaped Google’s front end—and, by extension, much of the web. Gemini has also been embedded into Chrome as an optional in-browser assistant. Early signs suggest users are embracing these changes, as Google recently reported that Gemini has surpassed 1 billion users.
