A key technical leader has departed from Alibaba's Qwen AI project, just one day after the company launched its latest small models. Junyang Lin announced on the social media platform X that he was "stepping down" from the project, though he provided no further details. According to his LinkedIn profile, Lin joined Alibaba in July 2019 and became part of the Qwen team in April 2023.

This sudden exit has generated significant reactions from colleagues and industry partners. It occurs amid intensifying global competition, as companies race to develop AI models that can rival those from leading firms like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

Alibaba's Qwen model family has become one of China's most notable open-weight AI initiatives. Recent releases have frequently achieved benchmark results comparable to systems from top U.S. developers. The tech giant first introduced the model in April 2023 and opened it for public use that September, following regulatory approval.

The company unveiled its Qwen 3.5 Small Model series on Monday, featuring four models with 0.8B, 2B, 4B, and 9B parameters. Described as native multimodal systems, they are designed for a range of applications from on-device AI deployment to lightweight agents. The launch captured attention within the AI community, with Elon Musk commenting on X that the models demonstrated "impressive intelligence density."

Lin's departure coincides with the team's push for new releases, prompting unusually strong responses from those who worked with him. Wenting Zhao, a research scientist on the Qwen team, referred to the exit as "the end of an era," thanking Lin in an X post for his contributions to advancing open-source AI and engineering.

Yuchen Jin, CTO of AI infrastructure startup Hyperbolic, noted that Lin played a key role in connecting Qwen with the global developer community, recalling late-night collaborations during model launches. Tiezhen Wang, head of APAC ecosystem at Hugging Face, also described the loss as "immense" for the project.

The specific circumstances behind Lin's departure remain unclear, and he did not respond to a request for comment. Chen Cheng, a contributor to the Qwen project, expressed being "heartbroken" by the news. In a post on X that seemed directed at Lin, Cheng wrote, "I know leaving wasn't your choice," and mentioned the team had been working together on launches just hours earlier.

In a related development, another Qwen team member, Binyuan Hui, has updated his X profile to describe himself as "formerly MTS @Alibaba_Qwen." It is not immediately clear whether he has left the company or when this change was made. Alibaba has not responded to requests for comment regarding the reasons for Lin's departure or the current leadership structure of the Qwen team.
