Amazon Invests $5 Billion in Anthropic, Securing Major AWS Commitment

On Monday, Anthropic revealed that Amazon has committed to an additional $5 billion investment, increasing Amazon's total stake in the company to $13 billion. In return, Anthropic has pledged to allocate over $100 billion over the next decade to Amazon Web Services (AWS), securing up to 5GW of new computing capacity to develop and operate its Claude AI model.

This arrangement mirrors a similar agreement Amazon entered with OpenAI just two months prior. In that instance, Amazon participated in a $110 billion funding round, contributing $50 billion, which established a pre-money valuation of $730 billion for the ChatGPT creator. Like the Anthropic deal, a significant portion of that investment was structured as cloud infrastructure services rather than direct cash.

Central to this partnership are Amazon's proprietary chips: the energy-efficient Graviton CPU and the Trainium AI accelerator chip, designed to compete with Nvidia. The agreement with Anthropic specifically includes access to Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, even though the Trainium4 is not yet on the market. The most recent iteration, Trainium3, launched in December.

Additionally, Anthropic has secured the right to purchase capacity on future Amazon chips as they are released. This announcement may hint at an upcoming new funding round for Anthropic, especially as venture capitalists have reportedly been proposing investments that could value the AI firm at $800 billion or more.
