Google Launches Gemini "Call for Me" AI Feature That Makes Calls to Businesses on Your Behalf

Google is introducing a new capability called "Call for Me" that allows Gemini to place phone calls to businesses on a user's behalf. This development comes as AI agents such as Meta's Muse and Instinct are already capable of making calls for users.
The feature is set to launch first for Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who have a paid Gemini subscription. Users will also need to run the beta version of Google's Phone app for Android, since the company is treating this as an experimental release. Although Google has offered AI-guided calling tools for some time, earlier iterations had limited capabilities. With this new update, Gemini can share personal details that the user has approved during calls, enabling it to perform a wider range of tasks, according to the company. Users will also be able to monitor the call in real time and jump in whenever they want.
Calls made through "Call for Me" will use the user's own personal phone number and will be dialed straight from their device. Google says the AI is equipped to manage complex jobs — for example, contacting a store to check whether a product is in stock, booking a table at a restaurant, rescheduling an appointment, or putting items on hold. The AI can introduce itself to a business, work through automated phone menus, sit through hold times, and then carry on the conversation with whoever picks up. In the meantime, users can track the call's progress through a live transcript.
This launch is the culmination of years of testing AI-assisted, automated calling technology at Google. Several years back, the company impressed audiences at its I/O developer conference by showing Google Assistant phoning a salon to book an appointment, complete with small "umm's" and "ahh's" to make the exchange sound more human. Last year, Google introduced "Ask for Me," which allowed Gemini to call businesses on users' behalf to ask about things like pricing or services. Owners of Pixel smartphones have also been able to use tools such as "Hold for Me" and "Talk to a Live Rep," which can work through phone trees and then wait on hold automatically until a real person answers. A separate feature, "Direct My Call," can show the numbers needed to navigate IVR systems.
Google explained that it is beginning this experiment on a small scale because "real-world conversations are nuanced," and it needs time to refine the feature before making it available to a wider audience.
