Hugging Face introduced the Microduck on Thursday—a charming, duck-inspired robot priced at $399, with orders shipping in time for the holidays. Clem Delangue, the company’s CEO, describes the Microduck as an “open-source robot you can teach new tricks with reinforcement learning.” Standing 25 centimeters tall, the robot can waddle, lift objects up to 800 grams with its beak, right itself after a fall, crouch, and even roller skate. “Welcome to the era of open-source affordable robots to democratize physical AI and world models,” Delangue added.

Hugging Face is widely recognized as a hub where developers access open model weights. But in April 2025, the company acquired French startup Pollen Robotics to pursue affordable, open-source AI hardware. Just a few months later, they released Reachy Mini, a compact desktop robot. Now, the lineup includes the $499 Reachy Mini, running on a Raspberry Pi, and the $399 Reachy Mini Lite, which relies on a Mac or PC for processing. The new Microduck navigates its environment using a camera, lidar sensors, and two IMUs—inertial measurement units that track movement. Pollen Robotics highlights that the Microduck’s behaviors can be trained in simulation and then deployed directly onto the robot. From there, developers can fine-tune, retrain, and redeploy the bot as needed. The SDK, simulation tools, and full reinforcement learning training stack are all available on GitHub.

While open source offers developers transparency and control, it doesn’t guarantee that sensitive data stays private once consumers start installing third-party software on top of the model. Those apps can access the robot’s cameras and microphones and, depending on their design, might transmit that data to external services. The Microduck’s launch comes amid reports that Hugging Face is set to be acquired by Nvidia at a $13 billion valuation. Nvidia and Hugging Face have collaborated for years, with Nvidia supplying the startup’s infrastructure since at least 2023. Both companies have also been vocal advocates for open-source AI. Recently, Hugging Face made headlines for a cybersecurity incident, which occurred after OpenAI’s systems breached its sandbox during a safety testing exercise and hacked into the platform’s servers.
