Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, says open source AI is experiencing a surge in growth. Over the past few years, his company has evolved into something akin to a GitHub for artificial intelligence—a central hub where AI developers can both share and download open models and datasets. This platform is now used by roughly half of the Fortune 500.

Delangue notes a recurring pattern: companies initially rely on frontier APIs, but as they expand, the rising costs drive them to switch to open source models.
