OpenAI Acquires Personal Finance Startup Hiro in Strategic Talent Acquisition Move

The startup received backing from prominent fintech venture capital firm Ribbit, along with General Catalyst and Restive. Neither the terms of the acquisition nor the total amount of funding Hiro raised have been publicly disclosed. Given that Hiro announced it will cease operations on April 20 and delete all server data by May 13, this appears to be structured as an acquihire.
In a public post, founder Ethan Bloch confirmed that Hiro's employees will be joining him at OpenAI. While he did not specify the exact number of employees transitioning, LinkedIn profiles indicate approximately 10 individuals are associated with the company. Bloch did not respond to requests for additional comment.
Founded in 2023, Hiro launched its AI-powered financial planning tool roughly five months ago. The application was designed for consumers, allowing users to input financial details such as salary, debts, and monthly expenses. It would then model various hypothetical scenarios to assist with financial decision-making. During a product demonstration, Bloch emphasized that Hiro was specifically engineered to excel at financial calculations and even included a feature for users to verify the accuracy of its outputs.
While advanced AI models have recently shown significant improvement in handling mathematical tasks, this has not always been the case historically. This acquisition is notable for several reasons. Bloch previously founded Digit, a digital bank that automated savings for users, which was sold to Oportun in 2021 for a reported amount exceeding $200 million. Furthermore, this is not OpenAI's first purchase of a financial application.
Considering OpenAI promotes ChatGPT as a valuable tool for business finance teams, the move to bolster talent in this domain aligns with its strategic goals. Whether OpenAI intends to develop a more specialized financial planning application remains to be seen.
It is also plausible that this acquihire aims to enhance OpenAI's appeal among users of OpenClaw, a popular platform for automated stock trading where the Claude model is often preferred. Notably, Bloch mentioned on LinkedIn that he created his own OpenClaw auto-trading agent named RoboBuffett.
An interesting personal note: Bloch revealed to Business Insider that Hiro was his 15th entrepreneurial project, having begun his tech career at age 13. He stated that his first 13 ventures were unsuccessful. His 14th project, Flowtown—a social media SaaS tool launched in 2009—was sold for $4.5 million. Bloch later sold Digit for approximately $230 million. Now, with the sale of his latest startup to OpenAI, he joins a company renowned for its record-breaking growth and fundraising, which may yet achieve further milestones with a potential public offering.
